Drew Watson graduated from JSU in 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in English, and she is currently pursuing a Master’s in English as she works toward a career as a Novel editor. Watson is the Assistant Director of JSU’s Writing Center.
As Assistant Director, Watson coordinates events, schedules ambassador visits for instructors, and works with Dr. Billingsley in promoting the Writing Center while also working with students as a consultant. She wants students to know that the Writing Center is not only for English essays, but any assignment and at any stage in the writing process. “If they need help getting started or even understanding an assignment, the Writing Center is here for them.”
Watson’s favorite memory at JSU is from the Fall semester of 2021 after she had recently joined the Writers’ Club. They were voting on submissions for their Halloween competition, and they brought food making it a little party. “The club was (and still is) full of great people, and it was such a comfortable and joyous atmosphere.” Until joining this club, Watson had never done much beyond going to class, and “this was the first real moment where I felt like I ‘belonged’!”
When asked about her favorite professor and course, Watson credited Dr. Reed for being “one of the most amazing professors out there – not just at JSU, but in the world” because she takes care in her courses and students, and her excitement about topics is contagious. Watson credited Dr. Davis’s Literature of the South as being her favorite course. She said that this class was no exception to Davis always having the best readings, and she finished the class feeling very accomplished as she wrote her favorite paper she’s ever written for the class.
Watson advises current students to take advantage of instructors’ office hours and other resources offered on campus.
Watson invites everyone to check out the Writers’ Club and its student-created literary journal Something Else. The Writers’ Club offers a creative environment to all students who are interested in writing and workshopping. Something Else is not only for members of the Writers’ Club, and it is a great opportunity to be published and to read the works of other students. Any student can be published in it by submitting to competitions or to general submissions when they are open. This year’s edition of Something Else is in the works right now and will be published by the end of this semester.
