Ashley Himmler, a 2021 graduate who received her B.A. in English, works in the Writing Center while pursuing her M.A. in English. She credits the Department of English saying, “I am so grateful to the Department of English for giving me so many opportunities to learn and serve JSU!”
Himmler wants students to know that the Writing Center is not only open to first-year composition students. Even Writing Studio Mentors, like herself, schedule appointments with consultants to get help on professional documents like cover letters, CVs, and Teaching Philosophies.
After graduating from JSU, Ashley Himmler plans to pursue an M.A. in Catholic Studies at the Franciscan University of Steubenville as she works toward a career as an Instructor of English. Himmler works as a Writing Studio Mentor in the Writing Center, meaning she works with students in EH 105 and EH 106, helping them develop compositional skills in individual and group writing sessions. Additionally, she creates social media content for the Writing Center’s Instagram account (@jsu_writes).
Himmler’s favorite memory from JSU is participating in the Student Symposium. She credits Dr. Kostova for helping her prepare her first formal comparative religion/literature presentation, for which she was awarded the Best in College of Arts and Humanities award. “The experience showed me that JSU is invested in my success and scholarly interests.”
Himmler’s favorite class is a Special Programs course she developed with Dr. Larry Gray. In the course, she integrates all of the scholarly skills she has developed throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies, such as adaptation studies, film studies, and biblical studies, as she closely analyzes Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.
Himmler advises current students to get to know their professors because they are invested in students’ growth and success.
