JSU faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the English Department for their 2023 African American Read-In. The event will be free of charge and held on Tuesday, February 28th, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm in the Writing Center (Stone Center 230).
“The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.”
This local chapter of the broader national initiative aims to highlight Black writers. “Now more than ever, it is important to amplify Black voices and study a long tradition of literary excellence,” Dr. Julia Tigner said. “Representation matters as it broadens our understanding and appreciation of differences.”
Guests are encouraged to bring and share their favorite work by a Black author, or they can hang out, listen, and enjoy the refreshments. Additionally, guests can win door prizes, including t-shirts and recent books by Black, Southern authors.
