JSU Alumnus Jason Thomas St John graduated in 1997 with a BFA in Theatre and a minor in Mass Communications. He later obtained an MFA in Scenic Design/Technical Theatre from the University of Alabama in 2005 and his Education Certificate from JSU in 2009. St John teaches English, Theatre, and Journalism at Glencoe High School in Glencoe, Alabama, and works as a freelance scenic designer.
St John has done freelance scenic design work for JSU’s Once Upon a Mattress, She Kills Monsters, and These Shining Lives. Additionally, he has taught Introduction to Theatre for several years as an adjunct professor.
St John loves mentoring young people, and he stays busy teaching 12th-grade English Literature, Theatre, having students compete every year at the Walter Trumbauer State Theatre Competition, sponsoring the yearbook, being the PA announcer for the football team, and raising his two teenage boys as a single father.
St John’s favorite memory from his time at JSU is playing his first Mainstage lead, Elwood Dowd, in “Harvey,” and his favorite professor was Freddy Clements.
St John says he would not be able to do what he does without JSU, and he advises current students to work hard, saying, “You can’t blame anyone but yourself for apathy.”
