Jason Wright graduated from JSU with a BFA in Art in 2009 followed by an MA in Liberal Studies in 2012 and an MFA in Visual Communication Design in 2017. Wright has recently accepted membership to the Board of Advocates for the College of Arts and Humanities.
As educators, Wright’s parents, James and Judy Wright, taught him the value of learning, and Wright hopes that as a member of the Board of Advocates, he can be a resource and connector to the greater community of young artists who will benefit from JSU’s influence.
Currently, Wright is working for the Piedmont City School System in Piedmont, Alabama as a Fine Arts teacher for middle and high school students and coordinator of the Theatre Department. As a Fine Arts teacher, Wright most enjoys having the opportunity to introduce students to the performing and visual arts, especially when collaborating on large projects. Last Spring, with over seventy-five participating elementary to high school aged students, they successfully performed their Disney’s Moana Jr. production through Music Theatre International. Additionally, they were recently chosen to receive a grant from Alabama Arts Education Initiative to help with their theatre technology and programming.
During his time at JSU, Wright fondly remembers performing with the Jacksonville Opera Theatre vocal ensembles where he was able to explore both the visual and performing arts. He credits Dr. Patricia Corbin and Dr. Nathan Wight for encouraging him to creatively connect various artistic disciplines. Wright’s favorite classes were Ceramics with Professor Steve Loucks and Digital Photography with Doug Clark and Sarah Miles. “The faculty in the department of art were approachable, well-versed in their craft, and invested in my success.”
Wright credits JSU for providing him a diverse and multi-faceted education that has prepared him to think critically and creatively in the public school system, where there are often limited resources for the arts. In every class, he has been able to help build a foundation in the fine arts that he immensely values.
Wright advises current students to enjoy their time and to build relationships as they learn. “You are the captain of your ship, and you can chart your own course.”
