The Department of Art and Design opened two new exhibits last week featuring works by Joli Livaudis and Chiharu Roach. These shows are featured in the Hammond Hall and Round House Galleries until October 20th, and students, faculty, alumni, and the public are invited to visit free of charge.

In Hammond Hall, guests will see Livaudis’ gum bichromate works. Arkansas artist Livaudis is the head of the photography program at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock. With the use of 19th-century photographic processes gum bichromate and cyanotype, Livaudis highlights both order and beauty found in the repetition of the natural world on both the macro and micro scales in her show Apophenia.

Japanese artist Chiharu Roach, currently based in Birmingham, is displaying a tangled hair series in the Round House Gallery. Throughout her time in America, she has seen and experienced stereotypes and cultural differences between America and Japan, and she portrays these in her art. In this show, she delves into the spiritual connection between humans and their range of behaviors and emotions. With each painted hair line, she portrays a prayer for her clients, future owners, and a special friend who is no longer with her.
