Caycie Trotter, a senior from Spring Garden, is majoring in art with a concentration in graphic design. She is a student in the Faster Masters Program, which allows students to more quickly complete their bachelors and masters degrees.

When did you know that JSU was the right school for you?

I knew that JSU was the right school for me when I decided that I wanted to major in Graphic Design, and I saw how great the program was here at JSU. Also, all the faculty and staff at orientation were very welcoming and informative.

What are some benefits of your major?

Some benefits of my major include a sense of community, art shows that bring in many different people and give exposure to artists, and the ability to do something that I love for a job.

What is your favorite thing about JSU?

My favorite thing about JSU is the people here: students and staff.

What clubs/organizations are you involved in?

JSU Kappa Pi Honors Art Society, JSU Potters Guild, JSU Print Club, JSU NSLS, JSU Student Alumni Association

What is one way that you have grown during your time at JSU?

I have expanded my skills during my time at JSU, especially in the Art and Design Department. I have learned many different techniques and programs to help build my portfolio and better prepare me for my future career.

What is your favorite course that you have taken?

A few of my favorite courses that I have taken include Screen Printing, Graphic Design IV, GD/Designer Toys, and, currently, I am enjoying Contemporary Media.

Any recent accomplishments?

Last semester I was awarded 3rd place in the 49th Annual Student Show for my restaurant rebranding and packaging for Zorbas; I also had a piece (Farmers Market, a Screenprint) chosen to be displayed in the president’s home from this show as well. Also, my poster design for this year’s Arbor Day event was selected and displayed.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I plan to join a graphic design firm or work independently in the industry to gain experience. After this, I plan to become a professor at a university and teach graphic design.

Why did you choose to do the Faster Masters Program? How has it benefited you?

I decided to do the Faster Masters Program because I knew that one day I wanted to get my Master’s Degree so I could become a college professor. Then I was in a meeting and heard about the program, and I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. This program has benefited me financially because one of my Faster Master’s courses double counts toward my undergrad and grad degrees. A personal benefit I have also received from this program is the feedback and encouragement from current graduate students.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

A fun fact about me is that I enjoy playing the piano.

What advice do you have for first-year students?

Some advice I have for all first-year students is to get more involved in clubs and activities within and outside of your degree; it is a great way to make friends and build a community. Also, the advice I have specifically for first-year Graphic Design students is to save everything that you make; even if you think it is bad, save it.
