Christian Watts, a senior from Gadsden, is majoring in Theatre with a concentration in performance. This summer, Watts secured a professional acting role and appeared in The Shakespeare Project’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

When did you know that JSU was the right school for you?

I went with my gut and whether I felt I could fit in with the school. I also was looking for what the school would do for me to grow to become a professional actor. I felt that JSU would give me a sense of community and help me grow as a professional actor.

What are some benefits of your major?

I have had a lot of opportunities to do a lot of things in the department. We have stage readings, projects in our workshops, IPE simulations, and opportunities to work with the film program. There are a lot of acting opportunities to grow as a performer.

What is your favorite thing about JSU?

The professors because they will literally become your best friend during the semester, and it’s the best type of friendship to have in college.

What clubs/organizations are you involved in?

I’m in Alpha Psi Omega, which is the Theatre Honor Society.

What is one way that you have grown during your time at JSU?

I’d say I couldn’t have grown without all of the friends that have had my back and supported me throughout my time here at JSU. I just don’t what I would do without them in my life. In The Shakespeare Project’s production of Romeo and Juliet, I got to play the role of Benvolio (dream role). My experience with this company was an absolute blast! I’ve learned and grown so much working with such a talented and hardworking cast. I’m still new to Shakespeare, but we put so much work and hours into this show in only eleven days. I will never forget this experience.

What had been your favorite role for a JSU mainstage production?

Probably my favorite role I’ve ever played here in JSU’s theatre department was Chuck Biggs in She Kills Monsters. That was my very first show when I transferred here back in 2018. But my favorite production I’ve done with JSU was Company because it’s my all-time favorite Sondheim show, and it was just such a blast learning music from Sondheim.

What is your favorite course that you have taken?

Movement with Dr. Michael Boynton.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I’m mostly sending in a lot of auditions this semester and trying to line up jobs before I graduate. Also, I’m hoping later in life to go to graduate school to get my masters in acting.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I was a black belt in Taekwondo.

What advice do you have for first-year students?

I know this sounds cheesy, but just be yourself. People will welcome you as the person you are.
