Anna Karg, a transfer student from Hoover, is majoring in Art with a concentration in Photography. She recently was selected to have her work on display in the Gadsden Musuem of Art’s 2021 Focus Photography Juried Exhibition, where she was awarded an Honorable Mention for her work “Driftwood Beac.”.
When did you know that JSU was the right school for you?
Probably when I toured the campus. As someone who transferred here from a community college, I was already used to smaller classes and a smaller campus, so I did want something similar. I think smaller classes are more beneficial as you can connect more with classmates and your professors, so JSU seemed like the right choice!
What are some benefits of your major?
One benefit is the opportunity to learn many different types of photography, and this applies to fine arts in general. Taking lots of different types of art classes helps a person figure out what they do and don’t like. It helps them grow as an artist and pretty much every art class a person takes can influence their work.
What is a recent accomplishment about which you are proud?
The most recent is an honorable mention of one of my works, a cyanotype print called “Driftwood Beach,” in the Focus Photography exhibition in the Gadsden Museum of Art. It’s a great accomplishment for me, and I’m also super happy that the other two works I submitted are also in the show as well.
What is your favorite thing about JSU?
I really like the smaller classes; I think it really benefits me as a student because the professors can work with you more one on one.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I am currently not involved in any clubs or organizations right now, but I do work at the campus bookstore if that counts!
What is one way that you have grown during your time at JSU?
I would say the most growth is my photography skills just because that’s what I’ve been focusing on since coming here.
What is your favorite course that you have taken?
I really enjoyed the alternative processes photography class. There were lots of interesting projects and it was really hands-on, which makes learning a lot more fun. Another favorite is the history of photography class. I think it was interesting for me to take the history class at the same time because I was learning the history of what I was creating in my alternative process class!
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I am currently planning on going to graduate school for library science.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I read a lot of books, and my current reading goal for this year is 70 books!
What advice do you have for first-year students?
Try to develop good time management skills early on. It makes a difference with grades and actually learning stuff in classes!
