Three JSU faculty are planning to take students abroad for course credit during Summer 2022. Dr. Andy Nevala (Music), Dr. Eduardo Pacheco (Spanish), and Dr. Gabriel Lonsberry (English) will teach abroad, and there is still time for students to participate.
London, England
Nevala, Director of Jazz, will teach a music/interdisciplinary course entitled “Responding Creatively to London’s Rich Artistic and Musical Scene” from July 7 to August 1, 2022 in London. This course challenges students to explore their own creativity while experiencing London’s vibrant creative arts and music scene. Visits to the National Gallery of Art and the Tate Modern as well as to music venues such as JazzLive at the Crypt and famed Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club will introduce students to how different combinations of music and art affect emotions and how creativity springs out of mixing artistic genres such as photography, art, and jazz music. A final assignment allows students to express their creativity through a multimedia project inspired by responses to the artistry directly experienced on site in London. Students interested in learning more about this program may visit www.ccsa.cc or contact Nevala at anevala@jsu.edu.
On the same program with the same dates (Juy 7-August 1, 2022), Lonsberry will teach “Reading London (Like a Londoner).” This course helps students answer “What does it mean to be a “Londoner?” by reading poetry and short stories from great British writers on the ground in London while crisscrossing the city to many great literary hangouts, like Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Charles Dickens’ home, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. In addition to many literary sites, students will visit world famous markets, Kew Gardens, and many of the museums that make London what it is! This course is suitable for English majors and non-majors at any level. More information is available at www.ccsa.cc or by emailing glonsberry@jsu.edu.

Sevilla, Spain
Students interested in studying in Spain should check out JSU’s program going to Sevilla from May 14 to June 11, 2022. Students on this program will take Spanish classes, and the pre-requisite for participation is SH 101 and 102. Students in this program will enjoy learning more about the Spanish language and culture outside of class through a homestay with a Spanish family. In addition to the planned program, students may add on a two-day excursion to Granada featuring a guided tour of the Alhambra, the Jardines del Generalife, the historic city center, and more. The last two days of the program can be spent in Madrid. The course credit for SH 399 and SH 418 is available at half-tuition. Those interested in this program should contact epacheco@jsu.edu. More information about these programs and other study abroad opportunities, as well as the application to study abroad, is at https://www.jsu.edu/study-abroad/upcoming/index.html.
