Jacob Anderson, a senior from Gardendale, is majoring in Graphic Design. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his entire time at JSU. Recently, Anderson worked over 400 hours as a Design Intern for Cahaba Design Co. in Trussville, AL, where he “designed everything from stickers and postcards to branding packages and websites for companies and businesses both in Alabama and across the U.S.”
Anderson said the internship gave him the opportunity to “experience the everyday life of a graphic designer and to work with a wide variety of companies, furthering his passion for graphic design and confirming his plan to continue with that field post-graduation.” Anderson loves “getting to help people’s visions for their projects come true,” stating that the process is a reward in itself. He is welcomed as the design intern in the CAH Dean’s Office this semester.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
I decided to attend JSU mainly because of the Marching Southerners. Ever since I heard the Southerners for the first time, I knew they were special. I knew that I wanted to be part of such an impactful group that truly does change lives. I have met so many people through the organization and have made friendships that will last a lifetime.
Why did you choose your major?
I have always enjoyed creating things as well as solving problems. I chose graphic design as my major because graphic design is essentially communicating and solving problems through type and image. It is the perfect major to fit my personality, and I love what I do.
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the Art and Design department?
The coolest thing about the Department of Art and Design is most definitely the professors. They have a way of truly connecting with each student personally and helping us progress and develop skills each time we step into a classroom. They make learning fun and enjoyable, and we can tell that they love and are passionate about what they do, which makes all the difference.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I am a member of the Marching Southerners Drumline, as well as the Marching Southerners Design/Media Team.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
My favorite food to eat on campus are the beef tacos from The Caf.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
You can typically find me at the library hanging out with friends and working on my projects.
What is the last piece of artwork that you created?
The last major artwork I created was a logo and branding package for the Freedom Riders National Monument in Anniston last spring in partnership with representatives from the National Park Service.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy relaxing and watching any Marvel movies/series in my free time as well as spending time with my family.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to work in a design studio post-graduation to gain enough experience to one day open my own studio.
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
I would encourage all new students to get involved. Don’t just show up for class; actually be involved in class to get more out of the experience. Join a club or organization that best fits your needs and interests because that’s where the most fun experiences and memories come from.
What course would you recommend to a freshman at JSU?
I recommend taking photography. I think it’s a great way, even for non-art majors, to learn the basic principles of design, and it is something that everyone can enjoy with the technology available to them daily
