Karine Parker is a recent JSU graduate from Paris, France. She graduated from JSU with her BFA in Graphic Design in 2002 and returned later to earn her MFA in Visual Communication (2021).
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
I first came to JSU in 1998 for my undergraduate degree because I was accepted into the International House Program, where I lived for two years as an international student. After I finished my two years there, I decided to stay and finish my undergrad at JSU. Fast forward fourteen years later, and I decided to go back to do my MFA, which had just recently started being offered at JSU.
Why did you choose your major?
From as far as I can remember, art and creativity have been a part of me. I could not imagine doing anything else!
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the Art and Design Department?
When I went through both programs, the small classes really allowed me to get the most out of the lessons and develop relationships with my professors. Over the years, I also had the opportunity to see the department grow and get more and more awesome equipment students can use!
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I was part of the International House Program and International Student Organization (ISO) during my years as an undergraduate student.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
Chick-Fil-A, Cooter Brown’s, Yamato, and anywhere that has good coffee!
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
Anywhere in Hammond Hall and the Round House, but I also spent a lot of time at the library!
What is the last piece of artwork that you created?
Probably my MFA Thesis Show! It was a long labor of love, but, ultimately, I was so proud of it! My favorite piece was definitely the Vintage Circus Marquee sign with rotating lights! I got to practice my crafting and electrical skills!
What are your hobbies?
I love to travel and workout but will also take on any Pinterest craft or cooking project!
What are your post-grad plans?
I am currently working as a Senior Creative Director for a National Data and Marketing Company, as well adjunct teaching at JSU. I would like to continue teaching and sharing my knowledge and love for Design, as well as to try to get a book on the topic of UI/UX I have been working on published.
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
Take it all in and jump on all opportunities offered to you! Make connections and have fun! JSU is a small campus in a small town and a great place to be.
What course would you recommend to a freshman at JSU?
Definitely start with your core curriculum courses and get them out of the way! If you’re not sure about your major yet, try a few different things to see what you like and make sure this is the path you want to pursue. Nothing is better than finding your calling and being surrounded by others just like you who are on the same journey, so pick what you love and know that it’s ok to change your mind along the way!
