Mary Grace Hendley, a junior from Huntsville, is majoring in Vocal Music Education. She recently earned positions as an Ambassador for the College of Arts and Humanities, the Soprano leader of the JSU ENCORE! Show Choir, and the Secretary of Delta Zeta sorority.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
The primary reason I chose JSU was due to the amazing music faculty making me feel at home. A second reason would have to be the vocal music opportunities on campus.
Why did you choose your major?
My love of music has driven me all my life. I have always had a passion for singing. A career in Music Education will one day allow me to instill that same love of music into another generation. As they say, if you enjoy what you do, you never work a day in your life.
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the Music Department?
The coolest thing about the Music Department for me has been the amazing friendships and connections I have made. Being an only child, I have found some very close, fun, caring and interesting friends from all walks of life. The people I have met have been a huge support while here at JSU.
What do you look forward to as a CAH Ambassador?
Most of all, I look forward to the opportunity to share with new students the many ways to become involved here at JSU. It is truly an honor to be chosen, and I look forward to giving back to the department.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I am a member of the JSU A Cappella Choir; the JSU Chamber Singers; the JSU Show Choir ENCORE!, where I hold the position as Soprano Vocal Leader; and Delta Zeta Sorority, where I hold the office of Secretary.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
My favorite on-campus food is Chick-fil-A; Heirloom Taco is my off-campus favorite.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
My favorite place to be is where my friends are.
Who is your favorite musician?
I am impressed with the talents of the Tony award winner Sutton Foster and the Tony award winner Audra McDonald.
What are your hobbies?
Well, of course singing, which is more than a hobby, but I love listening to Broadway show tunes, dancing, and acting, and I am an avid binge watcher.
What are your post-grad plans?
I plan to teach. I would love to further my education by getting my graduate degree and possibly my masters in Vocal Music Education. I would like to teach at a school that has a lively music program with multiple options for students.
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
Have some fun, but take it seriously, and don’t mess around too much. That four-year degree will turn into a lot longer time frame, really quick, if you don’t have a plan. So, stick to it and stay focused.
What course would you recommend to a freshman at JSU?
If you can sing, dance, and want to be part of a group that loves pop music and show tunes, then ENCORE! Show Choir is my recommendation! If someone is looking for a challenge in vocal music, then I would suggest the JSU A Cappella Choir.
