Drew Watson, a senior from Lincoln, is majoring in English and minoring in History. They were recently awarded the Spring 2021 Outstanding Senior Award and will remain at JSU to pursue graduate studies.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
It’s close to home and more affordable than other universities. Simple reasons, but I’m glad they pointed me in this direction!
Why did you choose your major?
I really couldn’t picture myself doing anything other than English! I’ve always enjoyed writing and knew I’d want to do something with it in the future.
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the English Department?
The professors! Each professor is so interesting to listen to and talk with. They bring so much personality to the department.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I’m in the Writers’ Club! I only recently joined, but it’s a great place to share and workshop writing. It’s low-stress, and everyone there is so kind.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
Freshens in the TMB has the best peanut butter banana smoothie.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
The TMB! It’s the perfect place to grab something to eat and chill for a bit. Plus, the library is just a short walk away, so if you need to get work done or sit somewhere quieter, it’s a nice corner of campus to be in.
What is the last book you read?
Coraline by Neil Gaiman. It’s the same story that the movie Coraline is based on but with a few differences, so it’s a comforting read in that it’s already familiar, but has enough twists to keep me engaged. It’s technically a kids’ book, but it’s a nice go-to in between assigned readings.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy graphic design and sewing. If I’ve had a stressful day, one of the first things I do is open Photoshop and see what I can create. Sewing keeps my mind busy and has the bonus of giving me something physical at the end of it. If I’m good at these things is another question, but I do enjoy them!
What are your post-grad plans?
I plan to get my master’s degree here at JSU, but that’s the only plan set in stone right now. I’ve thought about continuing onto a doctorate or becoming an adjunct professor, but we’ll see!
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! I only just realized that, and I wish I had known it sooner. JSU has a lot to offer, and all you have to do is find it. Also, just showing up and trying is over half the battle. If you make an effort in your classes, your professors will recognize that!
What course would you recommend to a freshman at JSU?
I’d recommend Professor Donaldson’s creative writing class, EH351! Professor Donaldson is great at cultivating an encouraging environment, and that class prompted me to write things that I didn’t think I was capable of. It forces you to push your boundaries and find new ways to approach writing, but Professor Donaldson makes it feel easy and enjoyable. You also get to read what your classmates write, and it’s incredible to see what they come up with. It’s by far one of my favorite classes at JSU.
