Marili Zurita, a senior from Albertville, AL, is majoring in Integrated Studies. She is the Vice President of Members (2021-2022) for the JSU Ambassadors program.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
I chose JSU because I love how you don’t feel like a number, and you truly matter. Graduating from a small high school, I wanted a university experience without being overwhelmed in a big city. I visited JSU on several occasions, and each time it felt more like home.
Why did you choose your major?
Integrated Studies was not my original major, but ever since I changed it, I don’t regret it. I love how I can take classes in different departments and just choose classes I’m truly passionate about. I am taking classes to prepare me for Graduate Programs.
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the Integrated Studies department?
The coolest thing is that I can take classes that I’m truly interested in. I’m currently taking psychology, sociology, and child development courses. While these courses are not in the same department, they all tie together in several ways and will prepare me for my career goal.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
In addition to serving as the Vice President of Members of the JSU Ambassadors, I am also a member of El Latido, which is a Hispanic Organization that I helped start.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
I love traditional Mexican food, coffee, Chick-fil-A, and Dr. Pepper. I am not a picky eater, so I am always down to try new things.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
Recently I have really enjoyed hanging out anywhere outside on campus, especially in the afternoon. The quad, football field, and the TMB patio are a few of my favorites.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy doing crafts and different DIY’s. I also love to play basketball; it’s something that I have done since I was about 8.
What are your post-grad plans?
After graduation, I want to go to graduate school and obtain a master’s in Communication Disorders.
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
Soak it all in and enjoy it to the max. Whether you’re a freshman or a transfer, get out of your comfort zone and find your people. Find at least one organization that you are passionate about and be involved in it. Go to games or campus events because those are always a blast. Always go to things that involve FREE things.
What is a course you would recommend to a freshman at JSU?
The course that I recommend is Speech with Mrs. Meecham. She made the class so fun and I actually enjoyed speech.
