Holly Stokesbary, a sophomore from Alabaster, AL, is majoring in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and minoring in Political Science on the Pre-Law track. She is affiliated with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps and, more recently, was awarded “Outstanding Statesman” at the 2021 YMCA Collegiate Legislature.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
I chose JSU because of the welcoming atmosphere and amazing people! My favorite band director during high school was a Southerners trumpet line alum, and he really convinced me that Jacksonville was where I belonged.
Why did you choose your major?
I want to go into politics as a career, and English and professional writing will best prepare me for succeeding in law school in my future.
In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the English Department?
Being surrounded by such creative minds and learning in a department with so many different futures and goals ahead of us! Learning from people in other career paths is so valuable and is only this prevalent in our department.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I am a member of the Honors Program, the Marching Southerners, Freshman Forum, College Legislators, a volunteer member of the NAACP, and Delta Zeta.
What can you tell us about your experience during the 2021 YMCA Collegiate Legislature?
The Collegiate Legislators Conference this year was one of the most fantastic experiences I’ve had up to this point, and it really assured me that I’m on the right career track for my life! Being able to debate with others and really think critically about policy that affects our state was so much fun. Even though we were virtual this year, I was still able to make some great friends.
How did you feel when you were awarded “Outstanding Statesman”?
SO incredibly honored and humbled! The fact that these people that I look up to decided that I was worthy of that award was so rewarding.
What would you tell people who are considering participating in the Collegiate Legislature?
Apply! It’s so much fun, you’ll make lots of great friends in your delegation and in others, and it really challenges your mind to write your bill and defend it in front of your peers to get it passed.
What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off campus?
Definitely the caramel latte from Jazzman’s and chicken minis from Chick-fil-A!
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
The sixth floor of the library or Mason Hall.
What is the last book you read?
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
What are your hobbies?
I’m usually playing trumpet or watching true crime documentaries in my spare time.
What are your post-grad plans?
I plan to go to law school after I graduate from JSU, and later run for office and work in our government.
What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?
Find ways to get connected! JSU has something for everyone and finding people that are passionate about the same things as you is the easiest way to make friends. Having a good support system is so important at this point in your life, and the friends that you make here will be with you for the long run.
What is a course you would recommend to a freshman at JSU?
I love being in the jazz band here at JSU, and you don’t have to be a music major to play! I also really enjoy my historical geology lab, so if you like rocks more than the average person and need a science credit, I definitely recommend geology!
