Jewelle Morton, a senior from Phenix City, AL, is majoring in Art History. Recently, she won Best Undergraduate Presentation – Arts and Humanities at the JSU Student Symposium for her paper “Frida Kahlo: Art and Politics Between the United States and Mexico.”

Why did you decide to attend JSU?

After high school, I was unsure if I wanted to pursue higher education. I always appreciated the arts, and, after years of creating, I decided on going to JSU to pursue my passion for art.

What made you choose your major?

Originally, my major was Graphic Design, which I loved, but after taking my core art history classes I knew that was what I wanted to pursue! I have always been fascinated by history, and the fusion of art and history really inspired me.

In your opinion, what is the coolest thing about the Art &b Design Department?

Absolutely, the caring faculty and the variety of courses offered.

What motivated you to enter the Student Symposium?

I was motivated by the opportunity to display my research and presentation and by the experience to have my work shown to the public!

What can you tell us about your presentation?

I have always enjoyed Frida Kahlo’s work. As I took Dr. Springer’s American Art class during the fall, my research on Kahlo’s works gave a much more meaningful insight to her personality, as well as her artistry.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about entering the symposium?

Entering the symposium is a great opportunity to have your hard work seen and published!

What is your favorite thing to eat and/or drink on/off-campus?

Chick-Fil-A, of course!  

Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?

Definitely the library! Any down time I have on campus, you can find me on the 6th floor working on assignments or relaxing. Houston Cole definitely is a relaxing place to unwind.

What is your favorite period in art history?

This is a tough question, as there are so many interesting themes throughout all periods! If I had to pick a particular time period, it would absolutely be French art of the 18^th century!

What are your hobbies?

I love to paint, draw, and read! Creating in any form is absolutely therapeutic!

What are your post-grad plans?

I plan to pursue my master’s in museum studies! I would love to spend time traveling following graduation as well!

What advice would you give a student who is new to JSU?

Definitely get involved, make friends with your fellow classmates, and have fun!

What is a course you would recommend to a freshman at JSU?

I would recommend taking a course outside of your comfort zone! It may lead you to finding something you’re passionate about that you never imagined!
