Hannah Jones, a senior from Rome, Georgia, recently won a competition and will have her artwork published.
Hometown:
I grew up in Los Angeles but moved to Rome, Georgia in the summer of 2014 for my sophomore year in high school. I attended Darlington School.
Major/minor:
I am currently pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design. While enrolled as a full-time, graphic-design student, I have freelanced as a graphic designer, illustrated children’s books, and designed graphics for documentary films. I enjoy the arts: playing the cello, going to museums, and pushing myself to develop as an artist.
Recent accomplishments:
I am thrilled to have my work recognized by Creative Quarterly Journal. To be honest, I missed the initial announcement because it landed in my junk folder. Professor Runnells sent me a congratulatory email once she saw the announcement in CQ. I was shocked and excited to be selected as one of the graphic design WINNERS as well as RUNNER-UP for three additional submissions. Receiving this type of recognition gives me the confidence to work in the design industry. My work—Octane Coffee (Winner in Graphic Design) and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles rebranding, Friends of the Houston Cole Library, and The Footstool Co. (Runner-up in Graphic Design)will be published in Issue 61 in Winter 2021. Other recent accomplishments include:
- AIGA Glitch Mississippi State University National Juried Student Art Show – Selected “Best in Typography” and “Best in Branding”
- 47th Annual JSU Student Juried Art Show – Two pieces selected for the show in ceramics and graphic design – “Best in Ceramics” for Lone Pine.
- WORK MFA hosted National Juried Graphic Design Exhibition – three pieces selected for the show – JSU Potters Guild (Rebranding), Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (Rebranding), and Anyway You See It – Chapstick (Print Advertising Campaign)
I will continue to enter juried art shows throughout the year. It gives me the opportunity to receive feedback and recognition in the world of design.
Other accomplishments:
- Student Ambassador for the School of Arts and Humanities 2018-current
- 46th Annual JSU Student Juried Art Show – Three pieces selected for the show in sculpture, drawing, and graphic design – “Best in Drawing” for Perspectives of a Woman

What is the coolest thing about the Art & Design Department?
The Department of Art and Design is staffed with an incredibly talented faculty. I have been fortunate over the past three and a half years to be inspired, challenged, and encouraged by their leadership. They take the time to truly mentor the students in the program. The “coolest” thing about the department is that I will graduate with a portfolio of work that is unique and defining of my experience as a design student.
What are your post-grad plans?
Upon graduation, I would like to work at an advertising or design agency. I have developed a strong interest in branding and product packaging, but I am open to any form of design.
