When did you join JSU and when did you move to SAH?
In December, I will receive my 10-year service pin from JSU, and I moved to SAH in June of last year to advise Integrated Studies students.
What is your title and what are your responsibilities?
I am the Director of Integrated Studies and Academic Success. Primarily, I advise students who major in Integrated Studies by helping identify options for students to satisfy specific degree requirements, evaluate and make recommendations on adjustments to students’ programs of study, and suggest courses for students designing their own major. I am a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and serve as Chair of the Undergraduate Admissions Committee. I am also a member of the SPARK LLC Committee, which oversees SPARK LLC, a specialized living/learning environment where students with the same major live together and participate in programs that cater to their academic, social, and personal needs. Students who major in Integrated Studies and Pre-Nursing are chosen to participate in this program sponsored by the Office of Housing Operations & Residence Life.
Why should students choose to major in INS?
Students should embrace Integrated Studies as a major because this major offers students the opportunity to study many disciplines. INS gives students the flexibility to build their own academic program, an option not found in most traditional majors.
Why do you enjoy advising students?
One of the greatest joys in advising students is seeing the growth in student development. To be on the front line to watch students grow in terms of their education, major, and personal life is a very rewarding experience.
Do you advise any student organizations?
I serve as the faculty advisor for three student organizations. The National Society of College Scholars (NSCS), a society I personally chartered at JSU, is an honors organization for first- and second-year students. This organization recognizes and elevates high-achieving students. I also advise the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth & College Unit. The mission of the NAACP Youth & College Unit is to inform college youth about the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities and to advance the economic, educational, and social aspects among the youth population. I am also the co-advisor of the National Society of Leadership Success (NSLS), the nation’s largest leadership honor society where top students come together to achieve their goals.
What advice do you have for JSU students?
I have three points of advice for JSU students:
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Students seems to forget the definition of an advisor. An advisor is a person who gives advice and HELPs students.
- Get to know your professors. Professors want their students to be successful; therefore, it is important to establish a good bond with your professor. One day, you may need a letter of recommendation, and knowing your professor may lead to that reference you need.
- Work hard, but still have fun. Remember you are here to complete your college degree. Students need to find a balance between work and play. It is ok to take a break and relax, once your work is done.
