Miranda Ivey, a sophomore from Odenville, AL, is working towards a BFA in Graphic Design. Earlier this semester, she was awarded the Best of School of Arts and Humanities Award at the Student Symposium for her presentation on “Andy Warhol’s Influence in the American Pop Art Culture.”
Why did you choose JSU?
I chose JSU because I felt that “connection” that people are always talking about when it comes to choosing a college. I fell in love with the art program and was so excited to see the professors’ passion about what they do and what they teach; it was a no brainer for me!
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
I love to sing and create art for myself. My roommate and best friend, Natalie Walls, and I record together a lot with a makeshift studio we set up and write songs together; it’s so much fun. I also run a freelance business called mir & a design co. and when I’m not doing client work, I love to just create graphics and little art pieces for my friends and family.
What is your favorite thing to eat in Jacksonville?
I love Baha California Grill and Isshin!
Are you involved in any clubs or organizations?
Yes! I am the Vice President of Membership in Zeta Phi Eta, which is the communication arts and sciences professional fraternity. I am also a member of AIGA, which is the student graphic design organization on campus.
Why did you choose your major?
I was always drawn to creative activities growing up, whether that be singing, acting, dancing, or playing instruments. That has always been one of the true foundations that I believe has molded me into the person I am today. When I was a junior in high school, I was taking a photography class where we regularly manipulated and edited photos. One of the assignments in this class was to make a magazine cover with one of our photos, and that was when I was formally introduced to the world of graphic design and its limitless opportunities. I absolutely fell in love with it!
Which class are you most excited for this semester?
Graphic Design 2 with Christian Dunn. I had him last semester for my first graphic design course, and he is great at not only teaching us various techniques within this industry, but also showing us how to apply these techniques in their appropriate contexts, while getting us to critically think and conceptualize. Learning more about this field of study and getting more creative in the design process is very exciting, and I can’t wait to continue in these courses.
What has been the most impactful experience you’ve had as a college student?
This might sound silly, but I believe living by myself and having to start my new normal as a college student in general has been the most impactful experience. Going to that new routine from living with your parents and having practically the same routine for years was very different, but it also taught me adaptability in a way that I was not accustomed to and it was very eye-opening. It’s also bittersweet because it’s that gateway between childhood and adulthood, which is scary but also exciting!
How has JSU been preparing you for life after college?
JSU has taught me so many life lessons, but I believe one of the biggest ones is creating a balance in your priorities. Between working three jobs, being involved on campus with organizations, being a full-time student, and having a social life, it can burn someone out very quickly. I’ve had to learn how to readjust priorities so I can take a step back and look at everything in the bigger picture to determine what needs to get done and what is possible to get done.
Do you have any post-graduation plans (if any)?
After graduation, my end goal is to work remotely through my freelance business or work for a start-up company while renovating a tiny home to live in with my Alaskan Malamute puppy!
