Abbie Beatty is a junior majoring in Drama with a concentration in Performance and a minor in English. Last fall, she was named JSU’s Homecoming Queen, and she just performed in JSU’s Once Upon a Mattress. In April, she’ll be playing the lead role as Anne Frank in the upcoming production The Diary of Anne Frank.
Where are you from?
I’m from Jacksonville! I’ve lived here since I was about three years old.
Why did you choose JSU?
JSU offered me opportunities that I couldn’t pass up. I got the most scholarship funding here, I could live on campus and still be close to home, and there were lots of extracurricular activities I knew I wanted to be involved in. I loved Jacksonville, and it already felt like home to me.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
When I have time, I love to read. I also love dancing.
What is your favorite thing to eat in Jacksonville?
That’s such a hard question. Probably a quesadilla at Baja. Or cheese sticks at Jefferson’s. I already miss the buff nachos at Momma Goldberg’s.
Are you involved in any clubs or organizations?
Yes! This is my second year on the Gamecock Orientation team, and I am currently working as a coordinator. Next fall will be my third season as a Marching Ballerina, and I get to serve as a group leader. I am also Vice President of Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society and Communications Vice President of Alpha Xi Delta.
Why did you choose your major?
I had no idea what I wanted to major in when I first came to JSU. I had always heard to choose something you enjoy. I knew that I truly enjoyed working in theatre, but it wasn’t until my second semester sophomore year that I knew that was what I should do.
Which class are you most excited for this semester?
My directing class! Directing has interested me even more since I have started my major, so I am excited to learn more about it this semester.
What has been the most impactful experience you’ve had as a college student?
My entire experience as a GO! Leader has definitely been the most impactful. It’s been really eye opening to interact with incoming students from all different walks of life. I’ve also learned so much about leadership and teamwork while working with the GO! Team.
How has JSU been preparing you for life after college?
I feel like JSU is preparing me academically and in other areas as well. The management, teamwork, and time management skills that I have learned outside the classroom in teams and organizations that I have been a part of are preparing me for life after graduation.
Do you have any post-graduation plans (if any)?
Right now I plan to apply to graduate school at JSU!
