Hannah Jones, a junior pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design, loves the creative aspect of Graphic Design and hopes to one day use her talents in the fields of branding and packaging.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Los Angeles but moved to Rome, Georgia, my sophomore year in high school.
Why did you choose JSU?
I chose JSU because of the professors in the Art Department. I was given a tour by Professor Seth Johnson, the department head, my senior year in high school. The tour of the department solidified my decision to attend this university. The faculty were very friendly, and each person I met went out of their way to welcome me. I knew after meeting the professors in each art concentration that the JSU Art Department was where I wanted to get my degree. The faculty are passionate, and they convey that passion to their students. I made an excellent decision.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
My hobbies and interests include hanging out with friends, going to the Blue Ridge Mountains, watching Netflix, exploring art, and visiting museums.
What is your favorite thing to eat in Jacksonville?
My favorite place to eat in Jacksonville is the TMB because of the many food options and how easy it is to get food in between classes. In the TMB, my favorite place is Freshens.
Are you involved in any clubs or organizations?
On campus, I am an Ambassador for the Art Department and a member of several organizations: Zeta Tau Alpha, American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Engage, and the Student Activities Council (SAC). Student involvement is a critical piece to my success at this university.
Why did you choose your major?
I chose Graphic Design as my major because I love the process of designing and thinking creatively. Seeing a project develop from start to finish is the most rewarding experience. I love brainstorming, sketching, coming up with a new concept, and visually executing that idea. I enjoy the processes of thinking creatively and trying to work through different approaches to find the right design solution. I chose this major because I am able to bring my concepts and ideas to life through design.
Which class are you most excited for this semester?
I am most excited for my Graphic Design Workshop class this semester. This class focuses on product packaging along with the print production processes. I have always had a fascination with how product packaging can influence the marketplace.
What has been the most impactful experience you’ve had as a college student?
This is difficult to sum up with one response. First of all, joining Zeta Tau Alpha has had a significant impact on my experience here at JSU. ZTA has given me the opportunity to become part of something bigger than myself. This organization has given me the confidence and support system to take risks. ZTA has given me my best friends and has made JSU my home away from home.
Secondly, my Graphic Design Internship has impacted my experience here at JSU as well. This experience has not only taught me skills that are not as easily obtained in a classroom but has solidified my decision to pursue a career in Graphic Design. I have learned how to communicate with clients and how to design in a professional setting.
How has JSU been preparing you for life after college?
JSU has given me the needed tools to be successful after college. My classes and leadership opportunities around campus have taught me skills that have prepared me for my future. Before coming to Jacksonville, all of my goals seemed to be distant, but I have accomplished so much in a relatively short time. JSU has prepared me for my future.
Do you have any post-graduation plans (if any)?
My plan after graduation is to get a job at a design agency. The two areas of design that interest me the most are branding and packaging; working at an agency that focuses on one of those areas is my goal.
