Writing Clinic Prepares for Changes
Mysti Nichols is an Instructor of English currently in her third year of teaching full-time at JSU. As Director of the Writing Clinic, she is excited to be developing new services and expanding the clinic.
Where are you from and how long have you been at JSU?
I have lived in Calhoun County (either in Oxford or Jacksonville) for 15 years now. However, while growing up we moved frequently. I am in my third academic year of teaching full time at JSU, and I was an adjunct instructor for two years before that.
What classes are you teaching this semester?
This semester, I am teaching two sections of EH 141 – Oral Communications (hybrid) and one section of EH 204 – English Literature II (online). And the Writing Center counts as a course for me.
What are your new responsibilities with the Writing Clinic?
We are working on growing and developing the Writing Center, and my responsibilities are to research and develop these changes, along with others who are working on this project. Currently, I oversee the Writing Center tutors and Graduate Assistants, manage the schedule, and help students when needed. As services are added, these responsibilities will change.
What will be the new name of the writing clinic?
This change is one of the most exciting. The new name will be the Writing Center.
What services are currently offered?
Services currently offered include one-on-one assistance with student writing at various stages from rough draft to revision. We also offer students a calm place to work on classwork. We also provide technology, such as computers and printing, within the Writing Center.
Will there be new services added?
There are several new services we are working on developing. Some of these are:
- Scheduled tutoring times
- Specialized tutoring sessions
- Workshops such as citation style-focused sessions, writing a resume, major grammar errors, etc.
There are also several other ideas we are working on developing that I hope to be able to share soon.
Currently, writing assistance is available to students when the Writing Center is open–Monday through Thursday, 8am to 4pm and Friday 8 am to 12pm. Students are welcome to come to Stone Center 230 for this specialized help.
