Ms. Hudson, from Alexandria, Alabama, has been teaching History at JSU for fifteen years and was recently recognized at the national level for her mentorship of students. She teaches American History, Alabama History, and a special course on the History of Hip Hop and Rap music.
While it’s difficult for her to choose her favorite course, she says that American History (HY 201) is close to her heart. She loves “discovering and sharing with [her] students historical information on the various cultural groups that have contributed to the continued growth and prosperity of our country.” She mentions that the history of Hip Hop and Rap is also one of her favorites because of the rich cultural history. “It was once thought to be unacceptable in its infancy by many sectors of American society, is now over 40 years old, and is accepted by many cultures around the world,” she says.
In addition to the history of Rap, Ms. Hudson is excited about her current research on William Dawson, who was a music director at Tuskegee University. “It was his expertise and dedication that made the Tuskegee University Gospel Choir famous,” she adds.
Aside from teaching at JSU, one of Ms. Hudson’s favorite things about the university is the beautiful campus and her amazing colleagues. In fact, Mrs. Charlcie Vann, a colleague working in Houston Cole Library, nominated Ms. Hudson for the National Role Model Award.
“I did not think I had a chance of winning and was shocked when I was notified about my selection,” Ms. Hudson says. “This was the second year a faculty member from JSU was selected for the award. I am very proud to have been chosen for this award, and plan to continue to make a difference in my classroom, and my community.”
According to conference organizers, the National Role Model Award celebrates and recognizes “scholars and professionals who will find cures for illnesses or solve technological problems or address social disparities in society.” At the National Role Models Award Gala, Ms. Hudson was honored with VIP status and special recognition for her influence at JSU. She says that it was a wonderful experience. She had the opportunity to meet with “professors, students, and other recipients not only in academics, but also in medicine, science, business, and technology from across America.” Now back at JSU, Ms. Hudson hopes to continue having a positive influence on her colleagues and students.
