Sean Golson, a sophomore from Montgomery, is majoring in Drama with a concentration in Performance and minoring in Psychology. When he’s not involved in theatre, which his life “is pretty much centered around,” he enjoys swimming and staying active.
In February 2019, Golson attended the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region IV competition in Spartanburg, South Carolina. With a group known as The Hypothetical Theatre Group, Golson performed a piece of devised theatre at the competition. He has been very active in the theatre department at JSU, working with several plays: he played Swill in How I Became a Pirate, David in Company, and Avery in The Flick. In addition, Golson performed in a group piece in JSU’s One Act Festival and Student Showcase last April.
This summer, he played Malcolm in the Shakespeare Project’s production of Macbeth, and performed alongside professional actors. The production took place at the Anniston Performing Arts Center and held free performances for the public.
Why did you decide to attend JSU?
I chose JSU because I had heard great things about the theatre department and campus life.
Why did you choose your major?
Performance has always been my passion, and it was the only place I could see myself being happy and successful.
What is your favorite thing to eat on/off campus?
On campus: definitely the caf [Jack Hopper Dining Hall] on Sunday. Off Campus: Mad Hatter’s.
What is your favorite Shakespearian play?
Hamlet. It was the first Shakespeare play I saw live and I’ve loved it ever since.
What was the best thing about being part of The Shakespeare Project?
Working with professional actors every day and learning constantly from them.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
I’m involved heavily with the Hateless Foundation (a nonprofit service organization that gives back to the community) and the theatre department.
What is the coolest thing about the drama department?
No matter what your concentration is, you can still work on both sides of the stage.
What are your post-grad plans?
I plan to keep auditioning for shows and also get my master’s in performance.
